One of Fastavals absolute hubs have for many years been the scenarios, both tabletop role-playing game and live. Every year we present around 30 scenarios written exclusively for Fastaval, both by individuals and author collectives. The good scenario experience is carried by more than two decades of tradition for creating, writing and telling unique stories.

Roleplaying Scenarios at Fastaval 2019 – Call for synopsis

The Danish roleplaying convention Fastaval is looking for new scenarios to be premiered on Fastaval 2019. Please send us a synopsis describing your idéa for a roleplaying scenario and help us provide the participants at Fastaval with amazing and diverse roleplaying experiences.

Fastaval is one of Scandinavia’s, and dare we say the world’s, most prolific conventions for roleplaying games of all kinds. From more classic games, to trailblazing free forms and experimental LARPs to novella scenarios, all can be found and played at Fastaval. In recent years we have furthermore drawn a growing group of international guests to Fastaval, both as players and participants, but also as contributors to the program.

We are primarily looking for games in two different categories:

  • Full-length scenarios: Typically for 3-6 players running up to 5 hours, all included.
  • Novella scenarios: Typically for 3-5 players running max. 2 hours, all included.
  • We are also open to scenarios that do not fit neatly into these two categories – get in touch with us before sending us your synopsis so we can discuss if your project is feasible in the context of Fastaval.

Fastaval only accepts premiere scenarios, so they cannot have run on any other convention before. You are however free to do a remake of an existing, already written scenario, your own or belonging to someone else (but it is polite to ask them first). If you want to do a remake, you need to tell us in the synopsis what significant changes the remake has from the original scenario.

We highly recommend that each writer only send in a single synopsis in order to focus on that project. It is however allowed to send in multiple synopses if you have the time and energy to make all of them into amazing experiences should they all be selected.

Mandatory data

  • Title (need not be final)
  • Type of synopsis: full length, short story or other
  • Genre
  • Number of players
  • Is there one, no or more players
  • Expected playing time
  • Name, mail and telephone number of all participating authors. (It is possible to sign under a pseudonym, but the scenario managers still have to ask for author data.)

Deadlines

The synopsis must be sent to the scenario responsible Louise Floor Frellsen and Niels Jensen at the email address: scenarieansvarlige@fastaval.dk no later than Saturday, September 1st, 2018 at. 23.59.

We will send a reply by September the 16th. Shortly thereafter we will present the field at Fastaval.dk.

The finished scenarios must be delivered to the scenario responsible no later than Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at. 23.59.

Things worth knowing about becoming a writer

April-August: Synopsis sparring (mostly for writers new to Fastaval)

If you are interested and have not written for Fastaval before then we would like to put you in touch with a sparring partner regarding writing your synopsis. It will be an experienced Fastaval author who can give some constructive feedback on your synopsis and hopefully increasing your game’s chance of being accepted at Fastaval. August: Synopsis workshop

We will have two set of workshop meetings in Copenhagen and Aarhus this year, one for developing your idea and the second for feedback on your synopsis. These will be held on Thursday August 9th and Tuesday August 21st.

Since most of the international writers are not able to attend these meetings, we have also arranged for email-workshops that you can participate in.

The email-workshops will also focus on development of your idea and feedback of synopsis. The email-workshop will be done in English. It takes place over four days, where writers will be teamed together in small groups and will write emails with ideas, constructive thoughts and feedback.

The email-workshop will take place on Monday August 13th through Thursday August 16th. Please allow for 1 hour per day, if you want to participate.

September – February: Scenario sparring

Should your synopsis be selected for Fastaval 2019 we would be happy to help you get in touch with an experienced Fastaval author as a sparring partner for the next part of the writing process. We also gather all the authors for Fastaval 2019 in a common Facebook group, so you may exchange ideas and feedback with one another if you are interested.

During fall and winter we organize an additional three workshop meetings in Denmark. Participation in these are not at all mandatory, but should opportunity present itself we would be happy to see any of our international authors there. Especially to the writers-weekend in early November.

October: Workshop on the ‘scenario core’

What are the fundamental ideas and premises of your scenario, and how do you bring these into the play experience? Held on October 6th in Copenhagen and on October 7th in Aarhus.

November: Writers-weekend

An opportunity to meet and greet the other authors for Fastaval 2019. We retire to a cabin and spend the weekend workshopping, socializing and writing on the scenarios. The scenario-coordinators and their amazing kitchen crew takes care of the practical stuff. Takes place November 2nd to November 4th somewhere on the island of Zealand

January: Pitch workshop

All scenarios are presented to the participants of Fastaval with a short written pitch, and it is from these pitches that the participants choose which scenarios they would like to play. But writing a good and precise pitch can be hard. With only a few lines of text you have to communicate what kind of roleplay experience the scenario is aiming at. The goal of the pitch is not to attract as many players as possible, but to attract exactly those players for whom your scenario will be a good experience. Held on January 3rd in Aarhus and Copenhagen.

First and foremost the synopsis consists of a presentation for your idea. A short text that tells us of what is special about the scenario, why it is awesome and what experience the participants will get by playing it. What is the scenario about, what special mechanisms does it have, what makes it unique/cool/heartbreaking/soul-shattering good. But try to keep it to 1 or 2 pages in total.

Also, please note whether or not you plan to attend Fastaval. It is perfectly possible to submit a scenario to Fastaval and having it played without being there in person. However, we hope very much that the authors will be there to talk to players and GMs when the scenario is playing.

Many Fastaval scenarios makes use of free form techniques, incorporate LARP elements or don’t play out around a table. If you have special needs for your scenario (a lot of players, very few players, need a particular area of play, etc) or want to check what is possible (which is almost anything!), drop us a line before sending in your synopsis.

Since there is normally a huge interest in submitting scenarios for Fastaval, all the synopses will go through a selection process, and we will pick the cream of the crop for the final Fastaval line up.

The guiding principle for the selection is that we are looking for the broadest range of scenarios that we believe will give the participants of Fastaval the best experience. The participants are however a large and diverse bunch, so there are many things to consider.

First we look for quality in the synopsis with regard to the scenario idéa itself and how that idea is explained. Is it clear to us what will be happening in the playing area as the game unfolds? Are we inclined to believe that this will be the basis for good roleplaying experiences?

Next we look at diversity. We want to offer the participants of Fastaval a broad palette of roleplaying experiences. Any participant who look through the program should be able to find at least one scenario that appeals directly to them. So we aim for a broad selection with regards to different parameters like genre, theme, format, content, system… and also with regard to what age group the scenario might appeal to. However, you are not guaranteed a spot on the program because you have sent the only synopsis within a genre. If we find the quality gap to be too big we will have to accept that that specific genre is not presented this year. We would love to represent both action, drama, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, social-realism, epic, light-hearted, documentary, larps, in-crowd, system driven and anything in between and beyond this.

We also look for a wide range in experience among the authors. Every year we want new authors to try and write a scenario for Fastaval, to make sure there is a steady flow of new blood coming in. We also want authors with a couple of Fastaval scenarios under their belt, to give them the opportunity to develop their abilities. And finally we want some very experienced Fastaval authors, so they can share their knowledge with the rest.

We also have to look at language. We love that more international authors have written for Fastaval in recent years, but we have to consider that most of the participants at Fastaval only want to play in Danish, so we can only accept so many English language scenarios.

Finally we come to the ratio between novellas and full-length scenarios. In 2018 the allocation of time slots at Fastaval allowed room for 6 novellas and 22 full-length scenarios and we aim for more or less the same numbers in 2019. But if the synopses pull us in another direction then we will consider revising the time slots.

It is the goal of the scenario coordinators to provide the participants of Fastaval with the best possible roleplaying experiences.

Among other things, this is done by providing opportunities for sparring, workshops and moral support for the authors – all the way through the writing process from initial idea to finished scenario.

It is also the scenario coordinators that select the line up of scenarios for Fastaval, based on the synopses received each year.

As gamemasters and as former members of the otto-jury they have both had a great many scenarios in their hands over the years.

Louise Floor Frellsen has written scenarios for Fastaval almost every year since 2006. She does research on quantum optics, is an author of short-stories and has great experience with all the ups and downs of writing.

Niels Jensen has been layouting, writing, and sparred on scenarios for Fastaval since 2008. He spars with his students and high-school colleagues on a daily basis and finds great joy in helping the ideas of others come to fruition.
